The House Committee on Investment and Concessions has taken decisive action to enhance corporate accountability by summoning China Union for a public hearing.
In an official letter issued by the Chief Clerk of the House, Mildred Siryon, the Chinese mining company has been instructed to appear before the committee on February 19, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. The hearing will be conducted at the Capitol Building in Monrovia.
The Chair of the House Committee on Investment and Concessions, Representative Foday Fahnbulleh, emphasized that the hearing will focus on China Unionโs compliance with the recommendations endorsed in 2024. He made it clear that the committee will not accept proxy representation for the companyโs General Manager.
It can be recalled that in 2024, a House joint committee investigated China Union and found the company guilty of failing to meet its obligations under the Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) with the Government of Liberia.
The company admitted to its shortcomings and pledged to implement the instructions provided by the House of Representatives. However, China Union has since failed to execute the agreed-upon measures.
Representative Fahnbulleh reaffirmed the committeeโs commitment to its oversight responsibilities, stressing that ensuring corporate accountability remains a top priority. โWe are determined to work in the interest of the citizens and ensure that concessionaires uphold their agreements under the MDA,โ he stated.
The public hearing will be attended by civil society organizations, the media, and other key stakeholders to ensure transparency and public engagement.
