The Plenary of the Honorable House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on Education to Probe the Ministry of Education for allowing WASSCE to administer exam at 7PM in Yarpa Town, Rivercess County.

Plenary reached the decision Thursday, 23 May during its 3rd Day Sitting of the 2nd Quarter of the 1st Session of the 55th Legislature.

This decision was based on a communication from the Rep. Steve Tequah of Electoral District #2, Rivercess County in which he complained about the late hours of WASSCE been administered at 7:00PM in Yarpa Town.

โ€œI am writing to request your assistance in inviting the Minister of Education to provide an explanation for the decision to have administered the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) test on May 21, 2024, at 7pm in Yarpa Town, Rivercess County.โ€

Hon. Tequah also stated in his letter that the timing of the examination raised questions about the fairness and accessibility of the testing process for all students.

He averred that administering the exam at such hour could potentially disadvantage students who may not perform at their best during night hours.

โ€œI believe that plenary intervention in this matter will help shed light on the reasons behind this decision and provide clarity to the people of Rivercess”. Rep. Tequah stated.

Following the reading of the communication, a motion was proffered by Montserrado County Electoral District #4 Rep. Michael Thomas to have the communication turn over to the House’s Committee on Education to Probe the situation and report in two weeks period.

Meanwhile, theHonorable House of Representatives-HOR, has requested its Labor Committee, to cite authorities of the Wage Board, to clarify plans for setting-up the minimum wage of Government employees.

The minimum wage board is a statutory body setup to review and recommend minimum wages, from time to time, that will promote the attainment of decent work in Liberia.

A release issued Thursday, May 23, 2024, by the Press Bureau, says plenary reached the decision following a communication from Grand Bassa County District 4 Representative, Thomas Goshua.

“We wish to remind plenary about our communication dated February 26, 2024 in which we informed plenary of current day reality faced by workers when it comes to the minimum wage set. The present minimum wage doesn’t commensurate with the cost of living standard and we think it is unacceptable”, Rep. Goshua stated.

The Grand Bassa County Lawmaker appealed to plenary to invite the minimum wage board which is chaired by Labor Minister, to appear and give clarity on plans for the minimum wage of government employees.
