The National Elections Commission (NEC), says it has commenced the process of replacement of lost or damaged Voter Registration Cards, but for a fee of  US$5.

According to a NEC release dated Monday, August 14, 2023, the process kickstarted Monday, 14 August 2023 at the 19 Magisterial Offices of the Commission across the country.

NEC says the 2023 replacement exercise runs from Monday, 14 August to 19, August 2023, but interested citizens will first have to appear at the Magisterial Office of the county where he or she registered to be confirmed in the system.

If confirmed, the individual will receive a replacement bill to pay US$5 into government’s revenue to the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA).

Upon exhausting the payment, the individual is to return to the same Magisterial Office to have a new BVR card containing

“Anyone who is a 2023 registered voter and has lost or damaged his or her BVR voter card will have to do the following: 1. Appear at the Magisterial Office of the county where he or she registered to be confirmed in the system.”

The NEC release continues, “If confirmed, receive a replacement bill to pay US$5 into government’s revenue; 3. Proceed to LRA to pay the US$5; and 4. Return to the same Magisterial Office to have a new BVR card containing your existing details issued to you.”

The National Elections Commission (NEC), an autonomous public commission that is responsible to conduct elections for all elective public offices and to administer and enforce all elections laws throughout the Republic of Liberia, started the October 10, 2023 general elections voter registration exercise  on March 20, 2023, and ended on May 11, 2023.

Phase one of the exercise was held in Bomi, Gbarpolu, Grand Bassa, Grand Cape Mount, Margibi and Montserrado Counties, on March 20, 2023, and ended on April 9, 2023.

Phase Two of the process took placed in Bong, Grand Gedeh, Grand Kru, Lofa, Maryland, Nimba, River Cess, River Gee, and Sinoe Counties. It started on  April 21, 2023, and ended on May 11, 2023.

The Biometric Voter Registration System NEC will use a new system called Biometric Voter Registration System (BVR). Biometric relies on unique human physical characteristics, such as Fingerprints and Facial Recognition.

Mid last month, datas from the National Elections Commission (NEC), released the final exhibition figure from the Biometric Voter Registration exercise, shows that about One Million Two Hundred Thirty-seven Thousand Two Hundred Fifty-seven (1,237,257) Females will participate in the voting process of the October 10, 2023 general elections, which exceeds the actual number of registered males.

Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah, the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), in the James M. Fromayan Conference Hall on 9th &10th Streets, in Sinkor, disclosed that upon concluding the exhibition, deduplication and adjudication process of the 2023 Biometric Voter Registration provisional registration roll, the final figures of registered voters that will participate in the 10th October 2023 General Elections as: Two Million Four Hundred Seventy-one Thousand Six Hundred Seventeen (2,471,617). 

But according to NEC, “This number represents One Million Two Hundred Thirty-seven Thousand Two Hundred Fifty-seven (1,237,257) Females and One Million Two Hundred Thirty-four Thousand Three Hundred Sixty (1,234,360) Males”.

Vote registration exercises are use to document the names and addresses of everyone who is registered to vote in elections and it is used for electoral and other purposes.
