NIMBA COUNTY — The 2024 Senatorial By-election in Nimba County is reported to face low voter turnout despite mass awareness and candidates’ campaigns.
WomenVoices Newspaper Nimba county correspondent confirmed that the Senatorial By-election in Nimba County left shock as out of the 307,254 registered voters, there was an unimpressive turnout countywide of voters
Created based on the election of Jeremiah Koung as Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, the Senate position is being contested by four male candidates. They include former Senator Thomas S. Grupee, current District 5 representative Samuel Gongben Kogar, Armstrong Gobac Selekpoh, and Nyan D. Twayen, Jr. respectively.
New Yekepa Public School with 3 precinct centers; voting precinct code 33136 is among several other centers across the county ranked as the least, which had the lowest voter turnout percentages.
This, our correspondent said is attributed to eligible voters’ frustration over political rhetoric from candidates, while others claimed disappointment with the lack of tangible change in development following past elections as some key reasons.
This year’s by-election in Nimba County saw the lowest voter turnout in several decades. Voter turnout was slightly higher in cities than in towns and villages.
Meanwhile, several armed police officers troop in numbers to violent ‘Beo Lontuo Town, Nimba County District #4 and other districts for by-election security aim to maintain law and order and avoid any untoward incident.
According to the report, the authority of the Liberia National Police decided to deploy the armed officers at a request made by the Election Commission to maintain law and order.
