The University of Student Union (ULSU) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the administration of the University of Liberia (UL) to ensure the prompt resumption of classes at all university campuses.
In a statement released by ULSU President Madam Mary Kerkula, she emphasized the importance of respecting the June 19, 2024 resolution that was reached by all student-based organizations during a meeting. The resolution, which was a result of constructive dialogue and negotiations, must be honored by all stakeholders of the university.
President Kerkula expressed concern over the lack of student representation in recent decisions that have been made regarding the university’s management. She stressed that any unilateral decisions that undermine the June 19, 2024 resolution will not be accepted by the student body.
Furthermore, ULSU believes that any transition in university management should be conducted with careful consideration for the academic integrity and future aspirations of the institution. President Kerkula urged the university’s board to prioritize the interests of students, faculty, administrators, and alumni during this period of transition.
In a show of solidarity, ULSU has called on all students of the University of Liberia to gather at the Capitol Hill Campus on June 26, 2024, to petition the National Legislature for the immediate reopening of the school. President Kerkulahighlighted the challenges faced by the university, including underfunding, low faculty salaries, poor infrastructure, and lack of resources. She urged the university administration and the Liberian government to address these issues in order to ensure the smooth operation of the institution.
As a longstanding advocate for students, faculty, and administrators, ULSU days it remains committed to upholding the June 19, 2024 resolution and will continue to fight for the rights and well-being of all members of the University of Liberia community.
