The National Port Authority (NPA) of Liberia has made a contribution of $2 million to the country’s National Revenue from January to May 2024. This contribution is aimed at supporting infrastructure development in the country.
Executive Director of the NPA, Mr. Sekou Dukuly, noted the significance of this financial support, stating that during the six years of former President George Weah’s administration, the NPA has contributed a total of $4 million to the National Revenue. He noted that this amount was achieved in just five years under the current administration.
Mr. Dukuly revealed this information during a press briefing at the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism (MICAT) on Tuesday. He also highlighted the efforts made by the NPA under his leadership, including establishing cooperative relationships with key stakeholders such as APM Terminal and Alsealmata iron-ore Company at the Port of Buchanan.
Additionally, Mr. Dukuly mentioned the implementation of a digitalized system for data collection at various ports in Liberia, as well as the electrification of the National Port Authority compound. This electrification has allowed vessels to operate at night, enhancing the efficiency of port operations.
Mr. Dukuly also addressed issues related to the previous administration at the NPA, alleging that social security fees and personal income taxes collected from employees were not remitted to the government. He highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in the management of the NPA’s finances.
Overall, Mr. Dukuly emphasized the commitment of the NPA to contribute to the country’s development through financial support and improved operational efficiency. He noted that the NPA has gathered $6 million over the past six months, with a portion of this amount allocated to port digitalization and the remainder contributed to the National Revenue.
