-In Liberia’s Educational Sector
The Ministry of Education in Liberia is advocating for additional support and investment in the educational sector to enhance infrastructure development and provide quality education for Liberian students.
Currently, the education sector has received a total of US$111,329,481 from both the government and development partners, with US$48,498,456 (85%) allocated to recurring expenditures. Minister of Education Dr. Jaro Maley Jallahemphasized the importance of significant investments to achieve positive outcomes in the education sector nationwide.
Dr. Jallah highlighted various challenges faced by the education sector, including poor educational infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, shortage of trained teachers, high teacher absenteeism, and inadequate facilities. She stressed the need for donor support to address these gaps and optimize investments through coordinated efforts.
To combat these challenges, the Ministry of Education has implemented policies and practices aimed at improving education service delivery. This includes enhancing monitoring and supervision, setting up an Inspectorate administration for improved monitoring and evaluation, and enforcing accountability measures to ensure the proper use of public funds.
Dr. Jallah also emphasized the importance of strengthening public-private partnerships, focusing on improving learning outcomes, teacher training, school management, and the transition of volunteer teachers onto the payroll. Additionally, the Ministry aims to address issues inherited from previous administrations, such as scholarship arrears, delayed construction projects, and insufficient support for schools.
Despite these challenges, the Ministry of Education has made significant achievements in strengthening the national education system, promoting technical and vocational education and training, and prioritizing girls’ education and inclusive programs. The Ministry has also conducted county assessments, streamlined scholarship processes, and finalized academic calendars for dissemination.
As the Ministry continues its efforts to improve education outcomes in Liberia, Dr. Jallah says she remains committed to addressing existing challenges, enhancing infrastructure, and ensuring that all students have access to quality education.
