The newly appointed Culture Ambassador of Liberia, Mr. Kekura M. Kamara, also known as Malawala Balawala, is calling on the Liberia National Legislature to pass the Conventional Development of Arts and Culture Bill. This initiative, he believes, is crucial for the advancement of cultural education and the promotion of the arts in Liberia.

During his honoring ceremony held on August 24 at GSA Road, Paynesville, Ambassador Kamara emphasized that his administration is committed to advocating for the development of arts and culture in the country. He stated, “The Conventional Development of Arts and Culture Bill will provide the framework necessary for us to advocate effectively for our cultural heritage.”

Ambassador Kamara expressed his administration’s reliance on the government to support cultural initiatives across Liberia. “We are depending on the government to bolster the arts,” he said, highlighting the need for governmental backing to transform the cultural landscape.

He also outlined his vision for the culture industry in Liberia, emphasizing the importance of self-financing and self-protection. “While we aim to generate our own funding and safeguard our interests, we need governmental transformation to enhance the cultural industry throughout Liberia,” he explained.

Following President Joseph N. Boakai’s announcement of his appointment, Ambassador Kamara noted that the president underscored the importance of fostering growth and development in Liberian culture. “President Boakai dreams of promoting and developing the arts and culture of Liberia,” he said, adding that the president is committed to increasing awareness of Liberian culture and supporting artists.

“The president wants to promote our cultural identity, principles, and artistic achievements. This includes education on performance and cultural relations, as well as fostering exchanges and collaborations,” he added.

Ambassador Kamara reiterated the necessity of advocating for the cultural sector, which he claims has been overlooked for years. He emphasized the importance of supporting artists to continue the development of Liberia’s cultural heritage. “The president encourages us to build and maintain relationships with artists, cultural institutions, agencies, and other stakeholders to foster collaboration and partnerships in the arts and culture sector,” he stated.

He also highlighted the need to utilize various platforms to showcase the richness and diversity of Liberian artistic expressions. “Liberian culture should be celebrated and shared through educational programs, public speaking engagements, and business initiatives that raise awareness,” he said.

Ambassador Kamara concluded by acknowledging President Boakai’s unwavering support for the arts and culture sector in Liberia. “He has been a steadfast advocate for the importance of art and culture in our society,” he affirmed. “With his backing, we are optimistic about the future of the cultural landscape in Liberia.”
