– SHE-CAN full U.S. college scholarships open again

Monrovia, Liberia – September 27, 2024: In an inspiring initiative aimed at fostering leadership and educational excellence among young women in Liberia, the U.S.-based non-profit organization SHE-CAN (Supporting Her Education Changes A Nation) has announced an open call for applications for its prestigious leadership program. This program offers full scholarships to top U.S. universities, covering all college expenses for selected candidates.

A Vision for Systemic Change

Founded with the mission of creating global women leaders in post-conflict countries, SHE-CAN believes that true systemic change is driven by educated women who can return to their home countries as impactful leaders. Since its inception in 2011, SHE-CAN has empowered 119 scholars from Rwanda, Liberia, Cambodia, and Guatemala. Notably, 25 of these scholars hail from Liberia, illustrating the organization’s commitment to fostering leadership in the country.

A Comprehensive Support System

SHE-CAN’s program is more than just a scholarship. It encompasses financial support, leadership training, mentorship, and career development to ensure that scholars are well-prepared to become transformative leaders in their communities. Each scholar signs a pledge to return to Liberia within a year of graduation and commits to staying for at least three years to contribute to their community’s development.

Celebrating Graduates and Current Scholars

The impact of SHE-CAN’s work is already evident. The first four Liberian scholars—Janet “CeCe” Kwenah (Lafayette College), Jennifer Maxwell (Muhlenberg College), Shennel Henries (University of San Francisco), and Tarlee H. Dawn (Babson College)—graduated in May 2024. Three are currently completing a year-long OPT job training experience and will return to Liberia in the Spring of 2025 to start their careers. Janet “CeCe” Kwenah is pursuing a master’s degree at Johns Hopkins University and has pledged to return home within a year of completing her studies.

Other current scholars include Mabindu Sherif (Babson College), Louise Bloji (Lafayette College), Jedidiah Koubiessi (Syracuse College), and many more who are making strides in various prestigious U.S. institutions.

Partnerships and Community Support

SHE-CAN partners with the Angie Brooks International Center (ABIC) in Monrovia and YONER Liberia, whose team plays a supportive role for the scholars. These partnerships are crucial in ensuring that scholars receive the assistance they need to succeed both academically and professionally.

Upcoming Recruitment and Application Process

Eight members of the SHE-CAN team will visit Monrovia in January 2025 to interview future candidates. The organization is looking for outstanding young women aged 17-20 who are passionate about leadership, have strong academic backgrounds, and come from low-income households. Applicants must be completing high school by January 2025 and eager to pursue an undergraduate degree in the U.S.

The application process is entirely free, and interested candidates can apply via the SHE-CAN website (www.shecan.global). The application deadline is November 15, 2024. Candidates will need their WASSCE score report and high school transcripts to apply.

SHE-CAN offers a life-changing opportunity for young Liberian women to achieve their educational dreams and develop into leaders who will drive positive change in their communities. By providing full scholarships, mentorship, and career support, SHE-CAN ensures that its scholars are equipped to return home and contribute to Liberia’s development. Don’t miss this chance to be part of the next generation of SHE-CAN leaders.
