The Board Chair of Starz University has announced that starting next year, the institution will offer a Bachelor’s degree in Cyber Security. This initiative comes after six months of preparation, reflecting the university’s commitment to addressing the growing demand for skilled professionals in the field of cybersecurity.

Amb. Latim Da-Thong noted that the university administration has engaged in extensive consultations with key cybersecurity stakeholders. These include the Liberia National Police (LNP), the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), the Central Bank of Liberia, and the Liberia Telecommunications Corporation, among other major institutions. This collaboration aims to ensure that the program aligns with national standards and industry needs.

“We have collaborated with major stakeholders to review the curriculum, ensuring that what students learn will help protect the infrastructure of these institutions,” he informed the media. He added that the validation processes have been completed by the National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE), with the program set to span four years.

Amb. Da-Thong explained that Starz University’s decision to launch the cybersecurity program stems from its commitment to innovation and equipping students with relevant skills. He noted that many institutions have approached Starz to develop this discipline, similar to how stakeholders sought the university’s expertise eight years ago to establish a telecommunications engineering program.

He stated, “We can’t depend on foreigners coming here to do it. We are set and ready to start the program in January 2025, and we are excited about our decision.” Additionally, he revealed that six Liberians with Master’s degrees in Cyber Security will be teaching in the program.

Amb. Latim Da-Thong disclosed on the sidelines of a cybersecurity refresher training after his presentation on Thursday.

On Thursday, October 17, 2024, Uhuru Tech Solutions organized a day-long refresher training for ICT students at Starz University in Monrovia aimed at addressing the rising prevalence of cyber crimes.  This initiative also aims to equip young individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the digital landscape safely.

The program features presentations and hands-on activities that emphasize the significance of cybersecurity. Participants learned about various cyber threats, including phishing, malware, and data breaches, as well as effective strategies for risk mitigation.

The workshop stressed the importance of fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness among students to create a safer online environment by empowering the next generation with the right tools and insights.

Providing the introduction to the program, DMG HR Florence Gaye noted that the symposium is held in commemoration of Cybersecurity Month, celebrated each October. This global initiative aims to educate individuals and raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity.

“This is to protect our personal information while we navigate the digital world responsibly,” she said, underlining the initiative’s commitment to promoting safe online practices.

In his speech, Chief Executive Officer of Uhuru Tech Solutions, Foldestine Paye, emphasized the government’s vital role in fostering cybersecurity. He stated, “We need robust legislation to combat cyber crimes,” highlighting the necessity of legal frameworks to address these challenges effectively. Paye stressed that collaboration between the public and private sectors is crucial for developing comprehensive strategies to combat cyber threats.

Mr. Paye acknowledged the youth as leaders of tomorrow, noting their profound engagement with technology. He stressed that cyber threats are real, stating from identity theft and cyberbullying to scams and misinformation, the dangers are numerous. He emphasized the importance of educating themselves about these risks and knowing how to protect personal information. 

The Chief Executive urged them to use strong, unique passwords, think before they share, and always question the validity of online sources. Remember, once information is shared online, it can be challenging to retract.

Additionally, he addressed the government directly to play a vital role in fostering a safe digital environment is vital. Invest in cybersecurity education, ensuring that both youth and adults are equipped with the knowledge to navigate the digital landscape safely. Establishing partnerships with educational institutions, technology companies, and international organizations can help us develop effective training programs.

He encouraged participants to be good citizens as they navigate the internet, reminding them of their responsibility in fostering a safe online community.

Participants expressed enthusiasm about the knowledge gained during the training, calling it timely in today’s digital age. They appreciated the relevance of the skills acquired to current cybersecurity challenges.
