…LNP says, Warns Against Reckless Driving

The occurrence of motor accidents is becoming overwhelming, as many see it as intentional. Last week, along the Bardnerville-Kebba road, a truck over-ran a transport bus and resulted in approximately ten fertilities. On Sunday, October 27, a transport bus ran into a park defective truck along the RIA highway, resulting in twelve fertility and seven others undergoing medical treatment.
Meanwhile, as part of the measure to reduce motor accident cases across the country, the Liberia National Police has disclosed its intention to investigate accident cases as criminal cases. Speaking Monday night, October 28, 2024, the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police, Col. Gregory Coleman, stated that driving is a privilege, not a right.
He warned that careless driving that results in the death of another will not only be taken as a violation that warrants a ticket but will be treated as a criminal case. “Driving is a privilege, not a right. You cannot park a defective car along the road and take away people’s lives and expect to be issued a ticket. We are going to treat this as a criminal case.”
On Sunday, October 27, a transport bus ran into a park defective truck along the RIA highway, resulting in twelve fertility and seven others undergoing medical treatment. The Police IG revealed that the defective truck had no registration or any relevant documents to plight the streets. Something he asserted was criminal.
Meanwhile, he added that the LNP had put in place measures to strengthen inspection along a major highway. He further added that the measure put in place may not stop accidents but will minimize the occurrence across the country. “Some of the measures that we have put in place are to reactivate our highway patrol, to help stop the reoccurrence of some of these accidents.”
At the same time, he disclosed that the LNP is investigating checkpoints along the Ganta to Monrovia highway, where the truth came from: “We are also investigating some of our checkpoints. We were told that this truck came from Nimba. We are going to interrogate them to find out who were those officers in charge at those checkpoints that allowed this truck to pass.”
On October 24, the Head of the National Road Fund of Liberia (NRF), Mrs. Joseta Neufville-Wento, claimed during a live interview on Spoon online TV that nearly 3,300 lives are lost in road crashes daily worldwide, making road accidents the leading cause of death for young people.
Mrs. Neufville-Wento cited the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) as her source while advocating for stronger road safety measures in Liberia, a key focus of the NRF. “Nearly 3,300 people lose their lives in road crashes every day worldwide, making road accidents the leading cause of death for young people.”
