– IN DISTRICT #1, MONTSERRADO
MONROVIA: The Inspectorate Division of the Ministry of Mines and Energy has strengthened its field operations, clamping down on all forms of illicit and illegal mining activities across the Country, through the confiscation of contraband equipment and arrest of individuals for prosecution.
The latest enforcement was carried out on Friday, January 10, 2025, when inspectors of the Ministry (MME) received a tip-off. In a rather rapid response, a six-man team backed by the Liberia National Police moved into the area and seized mining equipment the illicit miners were operating. The items include oxygen equipment used for breathing whilst carrying out harmful mining procedures in a shallow hollow, and water-pump machines among others.
During the enforcement operation, the Ministry of Mines and Energy discovered that none of the individuals spotted on the site have mineral rights, and neither is the area licensed by the Ministry for mining purposes. The Ministry (MME) warned them to desist from such unlawful and dangerous mining practices or face further consequences for their actions as provided for by law.
The confiscated items were turned over to the relevant authorities at the Ministry of Mines and Energy by the Inspectorate Division’s Administrator, Prince Mambu, and the Team-Lead for assigned inspectors in Montserrado, Grand Bassa and Margibi Counties, Foday Varney. Experienced Inspector Mambu led the enforcement team to #7 Township, District #1, Montserrado County, assisted by Varney.
