The Jewel Starfish Foundation (JSF) has introduced a STEM lab – a huge step forward in empowering girls in Liberia with valuable skills. Offering training in areas such as online marketing, graphic design, hardware, electronics, and web development will open doors for many young women who might otherwise have limited access to these fields.
The ceremony took place at the JSF head offices in Congo Town on February 7, 2025. It was a significant event with key schools in attendance – including Haywood Mission High School, Christ the King Catholic School, and the College of West Africa (CWA) involved.
The chair of the board of the Jewel Starfish Foundation, Norwu Howard, shared some inspiring details during the event. With over 25 years of dedication, the foundation has already impacted the lives of 4,000 girls from 7th to 12th grade, which is incredible. Madam Jewel Howard-Taylor’s vision and life work have made a lasting difference, she said.
The foundation has not only empowered individuals but also contributed to the broader society by producing professionals in fields like auditing, medicine, and law. It’s inspiring to see how this investment in education continues to ripple out into various sectors of Liberia.
“It’s inspiring to think that one person’s commitment to making a difference can create opportunities for countless others, especially women and girls who might not otherwise have those chances. The Jewel Starfish Foundation is not just providing education, but also empowering people to believe in their potential and the impact they can have on their communities, she narrated.
The importance of information, communication, and technology shows how vital these fields are in today’s world. By giving students the tools and knowledge to navigate this digital landscape, they’re being empowered to pursue their dreams and shape their futures.
The idea that they have the opportunity to become “whosoever they want to be” is a reminder of the power of education, especially in fields like STEM. The Jewel Starfish Foundation is focused on equipping students with the resources they need to succeed in an increasingly tech-driven world.
ICT truly enhances learning by making information more accessible than ever. According to her, students can now easily research lessons, access educational resources, and learn at their own pace, something that’s especially valuable in today’s world. It’s empowering to think that with just an internet connection, students can access so much knowledge and support in their academic journey.
The board chair further said “Offering access to ebooks, digital laboratories, and online learning platforms is a great way to make education more dynamic and accessible. With these tools, students can develop not only their digital skills but also the proficiency needed to thrive in the modern job market. The foundation is providing them with practical knowledge and hands-on experience in areas like computer software and online tools, which are essential for most careers today.
By preparing students for careers in ICT, the Jewel Starfish Foundation is not only giving them skills for their future but also helping them create opportunities to support their families. It’s a sustainable form of empowerment, providing students with the tools to succeed and then pass on those benefits to their loved ones.
The Foundation has partnered with STEM Power Africa to make computers available for the students. This collaboration is essential in bridging the digital divide, especially in areas where access to technology can be limited. The pride in the project is evident, and the addition of an ICT lab at the Bong County Technical College is another huge step in expanding educational opportunities.
Norwu Howard emphasized the idea that “Each person has the potential to shape their future. Innovation starts from within, and recognizing that you have the tools and capabilities to create change is incredibly empowering. By tapping into your strengths and creativity, you can determine the path you want to take.
The world is moving away from traditional education and embracing technical skills is a vital shift. She encouraged the students to focus on what they see for themselves and who they want to become, which gives them the confidence to pursue careers in fields that are more hands-on, practical, and aligned with today’s job market needs.
Institutionalizing this training hub for ICT would ensure that the knowledge and skills students gain continue to have a lasting impact in Liberia. By positioning the lab as a key training center, the Jewel Starfish Foundation is setting the stage for long-term success, not only for the students but for the community at large.
Moreover, the lap being opened for partnerships and conversations is a great way to expand resources, expertise, and opportunities for the students. Collaborating with other organizations to bring fresh ideas and enhance the programs.
The closing of the event was a hands-on experience, allowing participants to get direct experience with the computers and training tools, allowing them to apply what they had heard and explore the resources firsthand.
