Monrovia: Congo Town is reeling from the disappearance of Momoh Davis, a suspected thief who was brutally beaten after being apprehended on January 13, 2025. The incident has ignited public outrage, and prompted residents of the White House community to demand that businessman “Chinese Michael” provide the living body of Davis. They have warned that failure to comply could lead to widespread protests and increased media scrutiny.
For nearly three weeks, from January 13 to February 6, Davis or his family did not report the assault to the police. However, on February 7, community members sent a letter to “Chinese Michael,” expressing their grave concerns for the safety of a resident. Following this, they held a meeting with a representative of “Chinese Michael,” insisting that he take personal responsibility for the situation. They reiterated their demands, warning that inaction could provoke public demonstrations.
In response to the mounting pressure, “Chinese Michael” reported the incident to the Liberia National Police’s R13 unit at Zone 3. Police officers subsequently visited ELWA Hospital, where Davis was believed to be receiving treatment, bringing the case into the public spotlight. The police have initiated an investigation, summoning both “Chinese Michael” and Davis’s father, Abraham Davis, for questioning.
Reports indicate that Momoh Davis sustained severe injuries, including a deep head wound, after security officers and unidentified individuals reportedly took matters into their own hands. On the night of January 13, Davis and an accomplice, known only as Jerry, allegedly attempted to steal solar panels from a fenced property opposite LC Lawson. When security personnel from the Pilot Security Company caught sight of them, the two attempted to flee. While Jerry managed to escape, Davis was apprehended near a swamp close to the Chinese Embassy.
Witnesses claim that security officers subjected Davis to a brutal beating before parading him on the main road, where his father, Abraham, witnessed the scene. Shocked by his son’s injuries, including a deep gash on his head, Abraham Davis inquired about what had transpired. Momoh reportedly replied, “I was stealing wire last night at another location, and the people there beat me. That’s how I got these marks.” Notably, a theft case involving Davis had already been recorded at the Zone 3 Police Station on January 12, just a day before his capture.
Instead of immediately turning Davis over to the police, security officers, along with Abraham Davis, took him to the residence of “Chinese Michael” on Congo Town Back Road, seeking assistance for transportation. The site where Davis attempted to steal the solar panels was part of a construction project managed by “Chinese Michael” on behalf of a friend. In response, “Chinese Michael” provided $20 to the security officers to transport Davis to the Zone 3 Police Station.
Upon arriving at the police station, officers instructed the security team to take Davis for medical treatment first due to the severity of his injuries. However, during the transfer to the hospital, Davis reportedly escaped near the Ministry Complex.
While some residents of Congo Town Back Road have expressed sympathy for Momoh Davis, others allege that he has a history of criminal activity in the area.
