-CDC-COP Brands Party’s Members Link To Capitol Building Arson

The National Executive Council of Liberia’s largest and foremost political civil rights movement, the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC-COP), has issued a statement of solidarity with Hon. Dixon Seboe and Hon. Abu B. Kamara, two lawmakers currently facing what the CDC-COP describes as a politically motivated witch-hunt by the Boakai administration.
In a press release dated February 19, 2025, the CDC-COP condemned the actions of the Unity Party-led government, accusing it of targeting opposition lawmakers who have chosen to uphold the rule of law over alleged bribery and political manipulation. The statement emphasized that the recent summons issued to Hon. Seboe and Hon. Kamara by the police were not rooted in the pursuit of justice but were instead a calculated attempt to defame and silence dissenting voices.
The CDC-COP commended the lawmakers for their compliance with the police invitation, describing their actions as a demonstration of decency and nationalistic duty. The organization also extended gratitude to opposition leaders and the thousands of Liberians who rallied in support of the embattled legislators.
However, the CDC-COP expressed deep concern over what it termed the “premeditated and politically motivated” actions of the police, which it believes are aimed at appeasing President Boakai and his Unity Party. The statement highlighted a recent incident on January 30, 2025, where the Boakai-Koung administration’s prosecution team allegedly misled the Monrovia City Court by presenting a National Security Agency technician as a police officer in a case involving Thomas Etheridge. This act of judicial manipulation, which resulted in a mere $100 fine, was cited as evidence of the administration’s willingness to distort the truth for political gain.
The CDC-COP warned that such actions by the government pose a grave threat to democracy and the rule of law in Liberia. The organization called on the opposition community, particularly its members within the CDC, to recognize the urgent need for the establishment of the CDC Police—a proposed security force aimed at protecting CDC members and the vulnerable masses of Liberia from what it described as continued intimidation and harassment by state security forces.
The statement concluded with a rallying cry for unity and resistance against what the CDC-COP termed an “insensitive regime.” It urged all patriotic Liberians to support the establishment of the CDC Police as a necessary measure to safeguard the rights and freedoms of opposition members and ordinary citizens alike.
As tensions between the ruling Unity Party and the opposition continue to escalate, the CDC-COP’s call for solidarity and its demand for the creation of a CDC Police force are likely to further polarize Liberia’s political landscape. The international community and local stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation, with many calling for dialogue and restraint to prevent further instability in the West African nation.
