NIMBA COUNTY — Ms. Irene Zoegbay, a young lady who faces severe pregnancy complications has received LD$38,400 humanitarian aid to address her pressing hospital bill at the Ganta United Methodist Hospital.
The humanitarian aid through the generosity of Mrs. Susanna B. Gweh Humanitarian Network, a daughter of Nimba County based in the US came at a crucial moment when Ms. Zoegbay launched an LD$38,400 humanitarian appeal to guarantee her release to go home after being held in an hospital hostage for weeks.
Irene, a resident of Saclepea City coming from a very poor family suffered a harrowing ordeal that tested both her strength and her family’s spirit of resilience.
Today, hundreds in thousands of people around the world need humanitarian support.
Irene’s tragic pregnancy complication left her unborn child lifeless within her, causing months of pain, suffering, and multiple surgeries.
For one and a half month, Irene lay in a bed at the Ganta United Methodist Hospital, undergoing four different operations in a desperate fight for survival.
While Irene fought for health, another battle loomed, which she was helpless to overcome. The hospital bill, a staggering 38,400 Liberian Dollars, was an impossible burden for her struggling family.
While maternal and newborn deaths occur in all regions, the vast majority are in the poorest countries.
Without the means to pay, Irene was removed from her hospital bed and relocated to the back of the facility; a place where patients unable to settle their bills are sent to wait indefinitely.
The hopelessness of her situation weighed heavily on her. She had survived the medical complications, but now she faced an uncertain future, trapped in a place where financial hardship determined one’s fate.
Shockingly, a glimmer of hope for Ms. Irene Zoegbay surfaced in response to her passionate call for an LD38,400 humanitarian aid appeal after her constraints reached Mrs. Susanna B. Gweh’s Humanitarian Network.
Donating on behalf of Mrs. Gweh, the Media Coordinator of Nimba D-9 TV, Mellish Gbor the humanitarian team had the goal of bringing much-needed aid to the most vulnerable people.
According to Mr. Gbor, Mrs. Gweh’s humanitarian service has a far-reaching goal of empowering the community and supporting their resilience for better livelihood.
He added that her donations over the years mark a significant milestone, impacting the lives of mothers and babies who are beneficiaries.
Mrs. Susanna Gweh, a Liberia living in Australia has never ceased to give back home, especially to those in dire need.
Mr. Gbor explained that while presenting the cash, Irene and her family were shocked and broken down in tears of relief with gratitude and smiles on their faces.
He said: “For weeks, she had thought she would never leave the hospital, her hopes fading as each day passed in uncertainty. But now, she was free”.
He further noted that every day, Mrs. Susanna B. Gweh is meeting the health and protection needs of men, women, and children in emergency settings around Nimba County, saving lives and supporting the path to a more peaceful, just, and equal future.
Receiving the cash donation, Ms. Irene Zoegbay described it as unbelievable her release to go home.
“I never expected that I would be released,” she asserted in tears.
“I knew no one who could help me pay such a huge amount. I had lost hope after being removed from the hospital bed and sent to the back. But now, all I can say is may God continue to bless Mrs. Susannah Gweh and her organization,” Ms. Irene told reporters.
This act of kindness was not an isolated one. The Susannah B. Gweh Humanitarian Network has long been a pillar of support for the vulnerable across Liberia, stepping in where hope seems lost.
Her team’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian services continues to transform lives, offering not just financial assistance but the invaluable gift of dignity and renewed hope for the ordinary people.
