MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Liberian government has condemned the recent altercation between officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP) and personnel of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), describing the incident as a “complete embarrassment” to the nation’s security sector. The clash, which occurred on February 26, 2025, has raised concerns about the professionalism and unity of Liberia’s security forces.
Speaking at the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism (MICAT) press briefing, Minister Jerolinmek Piah expressed deep disappointment over the incident, emphasizing that such actions undermine the progress and stability of the country. “The behavior displayed by these security personnel does not represent the values of Liberia’s joint security sector, which is tasked with protecting its citizens,” Minister Piah stated.
He highlighted Liberia’s ongoing efforts to rebuild and develop after the devastating 14-year civil war, which claimed over 250,000 lives and set the country’s growth back decades. “Liberia is on a path of economic growth and infrastructure development. We cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of our past,” Piah said. “There is no room for backwardness in our nation.”
The Minister also expressed concern over the potential impact of such incidents on Liberia’s international reputation. He noted that the country is working hard to overcome the legacy of its civil war and attract foreign investment. However, he warned that actions like these could deter investors and tarnish Liberia’s image. “We are trying to move forward, but some elements want to remind the world of our past struggles. This is unacceptable,” Piah added.
In response to the incident, the government has launched an immediate investigation. A joint security meeting, led by AFL Chief of Staff Major General Davidson F. Forleh and LNP Inspector General Gregory Coleman, has been convened to address the matter. Minister Piah assured the public that the investigation would be thorough and that those found guilty would face decisive punishment in accordance with the law.
“The government is committed to ensuring that such an incident does not happen again. We are taking all necessary measures to maintain peace and stability,” Piah said. He added that the joint security board has been instructed to investigate the individuals involved, facilitate reconciliation between the LNP and AFL, and ensure accountability.
Minister Piah also acknowledged the significant investments made by Liberia and its international partners, including the United States, European countries, and African nations, in reforming the country’s security sector. He expressed regret that the incident tarnished the reputation of the AFL, which has long been known as a “Force for Good.”
“What happened yesterday is not representative of the AFL’s values. We are determined to restore the integrity of our security forces and ensure they remain a source of pride for Liberia,” Piah concluded.
