In accordance with the provisions of Chapter 5, Article 32 (a) of the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, which was adopted in 1986, the Legislative Branch of government will formally get back to work on Monday, January 16, 2023, for the 6th and last session of the 54th Legislature.

According to the provisions of this article, a regular session of the Legislature is to take place on the second working Monday of January of each year.

The Chief Executive of Liberia, His Excellency Dr. George M. Weah, President of the Republic of Liberia, officials of the government and members of the Diplomatic Corps, as well as representatives of civil society organizations, are expected to attend the opening ceremony, as stated in a joint press release issued by the Press and Public Affairs Departments of the Liberian Senate and the House of Representatives.

According to the release, the ceremony, which is scheduled to start at ten in the morning, will feature a grand march that will be led by the leadership of both Houses of the Legislature from the Executive Mansion side.

In addition, the sergeant-at-arms and their chief deputies will raise the flags of the nation as well as each of the country’s fifteen (15) counties as part of the event’s colorful program.

On December 8, 2022, the Senate and House of Representatives brought their respective third quarter sessions to a close in advance of the holiday season.

The joint release acknowledged at the same time that following the resumption of normal legislative work, members of the August Body will give due consideration to the scrutiny and passage of the draft national budget that was submitted before the break and other human-sensitive legislation. This will take place after the normal legislative work has resumed.
