Outgoing US ambassador to Liberia, Ambassador Michael A. McCarthy, has disclosed that no amount of money donated to Liberia can develop Liberia unless the government opens doors for foreign direct investment.
“The UN cannot save Liberia; donors cannot save Liberia; only foreign investment can build Liberia.” Ambassador McCarthy asserted
Ambassador McCarthy, who had his last official media engagement as US ambassador to Liberia on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, asserted that Liberia can only develop when the government and people of Liberia become transparent enough to encourage investors.
He provided that the government and people of Liberia must create an enabling environment to encourage investors by cracking down on corruption and corrupt actors.
“Liberia must create the environment to encourage investors. The government must be transparent enough to create an emailing environment.”
Ambassador McCarthy, who was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on November 18, 2020, as US ambassador to Liberia, was nominated by former US President Donald Trump to serve as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of Liberia on June 2, 2020.
Following his arrival in Liberia on January 6, 2021, and throughout his stay in Liberia, the US diplomat took a critical stance on the corrupt practices of the Liberian government.
During his last media interaction, he stated that his critical stance against corruption is to ensure that good things happen in Liberia. He also asserted that corruption is the hindrance between Liberia and good things. “Corruption is the hindrance between Liberia and good things.”
