In the world of politics, and especially from our political setting, it is not uncommon for citizens to develop deep affection and passionate love for a particular politician, however; with the vivid demonstration of this experience before and even from the start of the 2023 campaign process for the incumbent President George Weah, many will still have multiple reasons to believe that he’s still cherished by the masses.
Like February 4th, 2023, July 17, 2023 and August 8, 2023, it’s unarguably clear that the Party (CDC) and its Political Leader (President George Weah) still have reasons to be hopeful of a reelection.
President George Weah continued with his campaign process Tuesday, August 8, 2023, in District 8, Montserrado County. Interestingly for him, the process was embraced by hundreds of residents of the district, amid the heavy downpour of rain.
Captured under the wet hands of the rain, water drained from the top of his shirt to the base of his footwear. Like him, residents, especially women that went to welcome him also felt the downpour of rain, but it still didn’t stop them.
Enraged with excitement, the residents paraded with the President in parts of the District, and later assembled for the formal event in Slipway Community, Monrovia, Liberia.
At said gathering, the President lauded the residents for the love, but emphasized his interest in being re-elected. “When you go to the pulling center please, I know you are clever but I want you to check for number 18, then you vote,” he pleaded.
In an attempt to state reasons for his reelection, President Weah told the gathering that through his first term, he has made significant impacts in major sectors of government, as well as in the lives of Liberians.
“Today we have more female in our government, today, you have press freedom, today you have peace, he highlighted and further noted, “If you can’t trust anyone, trust me, I’m talk and do”.
Amid the two years of disruption his government experience by the presence of the Covid-19 pandemic, he told the residents of Montserrado that said disruption can not be use as an excuse for his government, as they did all they could do to live up to their promises.
“People were in government 12 years and they complained about Ebola, everything was caused by Ebola. Yes, but I say to you, even with corona, we still performed well,” he said.
The President defaulted with members of the opposition who lashed his government for the alleged disappearance of 16billion.
According to him, no money was missing or stolen, as the matter was critically probed by international investigators.
With what that was displayed on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, it served as a proven fact that in the realm of politics, citizens often develop strong emotions towards their elected officials.
A politician like President Weah who captures the hearts of citizens often possesses qualities that inspire admiration and love.
Their charisma, and ability to connect with people on an emotional level can create a indescribable bound between they and their supporters.
Citizens may develop passionate love for a politician who represents their core values and beliefs, and if it continues this way, one will have much confidence about a second term for the sitting government
Howbeit, citizens displaying passionate love like all that have been displayed over the last elder months for the President, often find solace and hope in their words and actions.
This emotional support can help individuals navigate personal struggles and maintain a sense of optimism. Interestingly, many have openly admitted to the kind of connection they feel who’s in the presence of the President.
However, while it is natural for individuals to feel a sense of admiration and respect for politicians who inspire them, the display of passionate love for a politician can have both positive and negative consequences.
As it is obvious that we can’t determine the authenticity of the love we have witnessed for the President so far, we are schooled that the charisma, vision, and leadership qualities of a politician like President Weah can ignite a collective sense of purpose among the citizens, empowering them to work towards common goals and work with him to strive for positive change.
On the other hand, Passionate love for a politician can sometimes lead to blind loyalty, where citizens unquestioningly support and defend their chosen leader, regardless of their actions or policies.
This blind loyalty can hinder critical thinking and impede constructive dialogue, potentially leading to the erosion of democratic values and the marginalization of dissenting voices.)
When citizens are deeply attached to a particular politician, it can create an “us versus them” mentality, fostering hostility and animosity towards those who do not share the same affection. This can hinder constructive dialogue, impede compromise, and hinder the functioning of democratic institutions.
