–Pres. Weah admonishes Liberian electorate, ahead of Tuesday’s poll
As Liberians go to the polls tomorrow, President George has reechoed the need for their full participation, and in the most civil manner. “Go and vote, in a calm and peaceful manner with a full knowledge that there’s nothing to fear.”
At the climax of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) campaign activities Sunday, November 12, 2023- President Weah admonished his supporters, “I now call all Liberians to rally behind our cost, to make your voices heard on November 14, and to cast your votes for number two.”
He says- “Today I have come to tell you, you are doing the right thing, a George Manneh Weah leadership is your leadership.” At Sunday’s event, President told his supporters that his government, over the last five years, has built the foundation for the Liberia Liberians are yielding for, and it is from this backdrop he’s seeking a second term to build on the foundation his government has built.
The building of this foundation, according to the President, can vividly be seen on major sectors, including- education, health, security, infrastructure and many more.
Following his re-election, President George Weah has vowed to return Liberians, to implement processes he made during the campaign period. With this commitment of Liberians, the President says he’s dedicated to doing all he can to promote peace and security in Liberia.
As he stated few months ago, President emphasized that the country will not return to its dark days, as his government is committed to maintaining the peace. “My government will do all that is in
our power to ensure that the election will be free, fair and transparent.
However, he tells his Liberians- “A Joseph Boakai can not take care of this country. He has no strength, he has no desire to move this country forward.
October 10, 2023, and the runoff
The National Elections Commission (NEC) of Liberia released the final results from the recently concluded October 10, 2023, legislative and presidential elections, setting the stage for a runoff scheduled for November 14. The NEC declared that after a thorough and transparent electoral process, no candidate secured the 50% +1 vote majority to claim an outright victory.
“With the results of the 10 October polls showing that no presidential ticket obtained 50% of the votes, a runoff elections is hereby declared to be held on Tuesday, 14 November between the two tickets that obtained the highest votes of the CDC and UP,” the NEC boss revealed.
At a press conference held at the NEC headquarters, Tuesday, October 24, 2023, NEC Chairperson, Madam Davidetta Browne Lasannah, revealed the final tallies from the October 10 polls, with incumbent President George Weah leading with a total of 804,087 votes, constituting 43.83%, followed by former Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai with a total votes of 796,961, accounting for 43.44%. With a turnout of 78.86%, citizens engaged in the democratic process, expressing their hopes and concerns for the country’s future.
The National Elections Commission (NEC) reported that the runoff, slated for November 14, will be a crucial moment for Liberia. The two leading candidates, incumbent President George Weah of the CDC and former Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of the former ruling UP, will now intensify their campaigns, vying for the support of the voters who will determine the next leader of the nation.
