The Women Situation Room of the Angie Brooks International Centre (ABIC) for Women’s Empowerment, Leadership Development, International Peace and Security, has expressed concern and deep regrets at the tragedy that took place the evening of 20 November, 2023, outside the Unity Party’s headquarters on Broad Street where three (3) persons lost their lives and several injuries occurred.
In a press statement issued Wednesday, November 22, 2023, WSR conveyed its deepest sympathies to those who lost loved ones or who have family members hospitalized, following the accident.
“In that regard, it is our understanding that investigations by the Police and Security apparatus of the Government are already underway.”
Accordingly, the peace body urged the Government of Liberia to keep the public updated on its findings to avoid mis-representations, mis-interpretations, and misinformation being circulated to the public, which they believe has the propensity to cause violence and disrupt the peace.
This, they say- is critical given the current situation and developments facing the Nation. Doctors at the JFK Medical Center have confirmed three deaths, In a hit and run incident that occurred Monday’s night in front of the main opposition Unity Party Headquarters on Broad Street. Twenty-two (22) persona are currently injured while several of them in serious condition as a result of the incident.
At a news conference held at the police headquarters, Tuesday, November 21, 2023, Police spokesperson, H. Moses Carter said that the LNP “has launched an investigation into a tragic accident that led 25 persons injured”.
Of the 25, two males and one female are reported dead at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Monrovia.
Police investigation established that the cause of the incident was due to a vehicle operator who ran into some supporters of the Unity Party that were celebrating victory at their headquarters.
Mr. Carter said, the operator suspect, Lawrence K. Williams a resident of Du-road Flower Pot community has been arrested and is undergoing investigation at the police headquarters.
According to the police, after the alleged incident, suspect Williams went at his residence as if nothing happened instead of turning himself over to the police.
Currently, 22 persons including 19 males and six females are seeking medical treatment at both JFK Medical Center in Sinkor and Mawai Medical Clinic in Vai town on the Bushrod Island, a Monrovia suburb.
Meanwhile, the Liberia National Police has assured the public that the ongoing investigation will reach its logical conclusion and justice will be served where applicable.
