-HoR reviews his request
The House of Representatives- HOR, has unanimously requested its Ways, Means and Finance committee, to review President Joseph Nyumah Boakai’ plead to spend a little over 41 million United States dollars, to cover the government operations for the month of February 2024.
Plenary reached the decision Thursday, February 15, 2024, based on a communication submitted by President Boakai to the august body.
President Boakai said in view of the fact that the draft budget for the fiscal year 2024 was returned and is being finalized for resubmission, the operations of the government have to continue to avoid a shutdown.
Liberian President, H.E. Joseph Nyumah Boakai said in view of the above, he is seeking the authorization to spend the amount of US$41,300,000.00 as reflected in the detailed attachment.
The President reemphasized that the amount will cover the Government operations for the month of February 2024.
“In view of the fact that the draft budget for the fiscal year 2024 was
returned and is being finalized for resubmission, the operations of the
Government have to continue to avoid a shutdown. In view of the above, we are seeking the authorization to spend the amount of US$41,300,000.00 as reflected in the detailed attachment.
This amount will cover the Government operations for the month of
February 2024.”
Meanwhile, the committee is expected to report to plenary in a period of two weeks.
Late January, the Plenary of the House of Representatives (HOR) unanimously voted to return to the Executive the draft 2024 National Budget on February 15, 2024. Plenary took the decision based upon a communication submitted by Margibi County District 3 Representative, Ellen Attoh-Wreh.
“I present my compliments and request that the 2024 Fiscal Budget be sent back to the Executive for realignment”, Representative Attoh-Wreh noted.
According to her, based upon observation, the budget will need to be aligned with the agenda of the current government.
“In view of the above and due to the significance of the 2024 Budget; I would like you to kindly have it sent to the Executive for proper adjustment and realignment for the forward march of our country” she narrated.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning- MFDP, submitted in December 2023 to the 54th Legislature, the draft National budget in the tune of US$625.57 million for fiscal year 2024.
The august body could not act upon the instrument due to limitation of its statutory mandate which ended early January preceding the inauguration of the 55th legislature.
