GBANLA TOWN, NIMBA CO.— Local town leaders in Gbanla Town located in District 8 Nimba County are looking for the mother of a three-month-old baby who was found on a river bank on Tuesday.

The baby was found around 2 pm by two community members who chose to remain anonymous who had gone to the river. They found the baby alone sitting near the river between Kanwee and Gbanla Towns. It is not known how long the baby had been left alone on the river bank. The three-month-old boy was found naked and semi-conscious. Our correspondent in Nimba County reported that residents of the town narrated that the baby was shown to people living in nearby houses but none of the residents identify.

The baby is being cared for by one Nanly Jimmy who immediately contacted local authorities and the baby is placed under temporary care for now. The incident has raised alarm in the community while prompting a search for the child’s parents and an investigation into the circumstances leading to the abandonment. The local authorities are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

According to the citizens, they believe that the mother of the baby found abandoned at a riverside may have drowned as a result of swimming in the water. They are also investigating the possibility that the unknown mother deliberately took her own life because of hardship and the child’s father’s alleged refusal to give support.

They further noted that the child could have been born out of an illicit relationship or to an unmarried teenage girl, arguing that the mother could have allegedly abandoned the child after experiencing a difficult time due to the lack of care from her intimate partner.

The incident has raised alarm in the community while prompting a search for the child’s parents and an investigation into the circumstances leading to the abandonment. The local authorities are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
