Monrovia, Liberia  – Human rights activists and defenders across Liberia have raised serious concerns over the recent appointment of Representative Johnson S.N. Williams of District #3, River Gee County, to the House Committee on Gender. While acknowledging the Speaker’s authority to make such appointments, activists argue that the selection of committee members must align with the values and objectives of the committee itself.

Representative Williams’ existence as a legislator has been marked by a consistent pattern of anti-gender and anti-human rights rhetoric and actions, which activists say directly contradict the principles of equality, inclusivity, and respect for all individuals, regardless of gender identity. His track record, they argue, raises doubts about his commitment to advancing gender equality, women’s rights, and the protection of marginalized groups.

The House Committee on Gender plays a pivotal role in shaping policies that affect the lives of Liberian women, children, and other vulnerable populations. As such, activists emphasize that its members must demonstrate a clear understanding of and dedication to these critical issues. The appointment of a representative whose views and actions are perceived as counterproductive to the committee’s mission has sparked widespread concern among human rights advocates.

“The representation on this committee should reflect not only diverse perspectives but also a firm commitment to the principles of equity and advocacy for all gender identities,” said a coalition of activists in a joint statement. “Appointing someone whose actions and statements undermine these principles risks eroding public trust in the National Legislature and its ability to effectively address gender-related issues.”

The activists are calling on the Speaker of the House of Representatives to reconsider the appointment, stressing the urgent need for leadership within the Committee on Gender that is genuinely committed to advancing gender equity and defending human rights. They argue that the committee’s effectiveness depends on the inclusion of individuals who embody the values of justice, equality, and inclusivity.

In addition to their appeal to the Speaker, the activists have urged the international donor community and development partners to refrain from recognizing Representative Williams as the Chair of the House Committee on Gender. They emphasize that the individual leading this committee must be fully aligned with its mandate and objectives to ensure the effective advancement of gender priorities in Liberia.

“The integrity and impact of the committee’s work depend on the right leadership,” the statement continued. “We call for a reassessment of this appointment to uphold the committee’s mission and to ensure that it remains a credible and effective advocate for gender equality and human rights.”

The coalition of activists has vowed to remain united in their call for a reevaluation of the appointment, emphasizing their commitment to a more just and equitable society. They have pledged to continue advocating for the inclusion of individuals who reflect the shared values of equality and human rights in all decision-making processes.
