-To Establish National Debate Secretariat in Liberia

(Monrovia, Liberia – March 10, 2024) – The Amos Claudius Sawyer Foundation (The Foundation), an international non-profit organization dedicated to promoting good governance and civic education in Liberia, and the Liberia Media for Democratic Initiatives (LMDI), a community outreach media group focused on peacebuilding and democracy, today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish the Liberia National Debate Secretariat.

The Liberia National Debate Secretariat will develop and implement guidelines for national political debates, partnering with media organizations to host and broadcast debates, recruiting, training, and deploying moderators, while overseeing fundraising and resource mobilization efforts

Frantz Sawyer, Founder of the Amos Claudius. Foundation, said that the signing of the MOU with LMDI comes after a highly successful series of presidential and general debates organized by a consortium of organizations in 2023.

“The overwhelming response from Liberian citizens and stakeholders underscored the need for a permanent body to oversee and manage debate activities for future elections at all levels,” he said.

Mr. Sawyer added that the Foundation is thrilled to partner with LMDI to establish the National Debate Secretariat, which will ensure that debates become a regular feature of Liberia’s electoral process, providing voters with a clear understanding of candidates’ positions on critical issues. The Liberia National Debate Secretariat is  a vital platform for Liberians  to exchange ideas and make informed choices.

John O. Kollie, LMDI Founder and Director said that the media has a crucial role to play in disseminating these debates to a wide audience, ensuring that all Liberians have the opportunity to engage electoral processes.  He added that the establishment of the Liberia National Debate Secretariat is a significant step forward for Liberia’s democracy.

“By providing a platform for civil and issue-based political discourse, the Secretariat will empower voters and strengthen Liberia’s democratic institutions,” he said.

The Amos C. Foundation echoing that sentiment believes that Informed citizens who are equipped to make decisions based on a candidate’s stance on critical issues are essential for a well-functioning democracy.
