Murder Cases Linked to Love:

In February 2023, Nimba 8th Judicial Circuit Court in Sanniquellie sentenced a 33-year-old man to 80 years in prison for killing his girlfriend. The judge ruled that convict, Ernest Gbartoe, 33, committed a first-degree felony of murder which carries a maximum penalty of death upon conviction.

Judge Roland F. Dahn said that the convict was a young man energetic enough to work but he instead decided to engage himself in an unlawful act to kill his girlfriend Yei Gargbay.

The 80-year-old convict on the night of December 3, 2022, attacked his girlfriend Yei Gargbay with a machete and chopped her head and other body parts over claims that she was in a love affair with another man for which she always refused his sexual advances at night.

The two (Ernest and Yei) were residents of the New Barrack Community in Sanniqiillie, Nimba County. Following the commission of the act, defendant Ernest Gbatoe absconded the scene and was later arrested in a nearby village and taken to Sanniqiillie where he allegedly committed the crime for preliminary investigation.

While being quizzed by officers of the Crime Services Department (CSD) defendant Gbatoe admitted that he was deeply in love with his girlfriend and could not withstand the heartbreak of seeing her sharing her love with another man after spending more than six years living together.
