–  Former President Weah Tells ECOWAS Delegation

Monrovia, Former Liberian President George Weah delivered a blistering critique of the current administration during a closed-door meeting with an ECOWAS delegation today, warning that President Joseph Boakai’s government is “endangering Liberia’s hard-won peace and democratic foundations.”

In the exchange at his Paynesville office, the opposition leader singled out recent turmoil in the House of Representatives as evidence of democratic backsliding. “My concession after the 2023 elections was meant to preserve stability,” Weah stated, “but this administration is now sponsoring unconstitutional power grabs that threaten everything we’ve built.” The former football star turned statesman presented what he called “documented evidence” of government-backed violations of legislative procedures.

The ECOWAS delegation, led by seasoned diplomat Ibrahim Gambari, maintained a neutral posture while acknowledging the gravity of the allegations. “ECOWAS remains committed to supporting constitutional order in all member states,” Gambari said, though he stopped short of endorsing Weah’s claims. The meeting comes amid an escalating political crisis that has paralyzed legislative functions and raised fears of institutional collapse.

Political analysts suggest the unusually public condemnation signals Weah’s intent to mobilize international pressure on Boakai, while the administration maintains its actions merely correct previous governance failures. With Liberia’s fragile peace hanging in the balance, regional leaders are closely monitoring whether this confrontation escalates into full-blown institutional warfare.
