A civil society organization in Gbarnga, DELTA Human Rights Foundation is calling on President Joseph Boakai to change the titles of local government officials, when nominating them.
While the group hails the appointment of Bomi County Assistant Superintendent for Development, it said the job title contravenes the Local Governance Act of 2018.
The group in a facebook post on its page, lamented that the position of ‘Assistant Superintendent for Development’ has been changed to ‘County Development Officer, since the passage of the LGA’.
“As per our Local Government Law of 2018, this job title, Assistant County Superintendent for Development do not exist anymore, instead, it should be COUNTY DEVELOPMENT OFFICER”, the post indicates.
On Monday, February 19, 2024, the Liberian leader made several appointments in government, including “Assistant Superintendent for Development” for Bomi County.
The DELTA Human Rights Foundation calls is predicated upon chapter 5, session 5.1 of the Local Governance Act of 2018, which requires change of county administrators titles.
For example, the act calls for the position of an Assistant Superintendent for Development to be changed to County Development Officer.
According to the human rights organization, the appointment of Assistant Development Superintendent has the propensity to fuel confusion about the role.
The group is urging President Joseph Boakai to review the LGA-2018 before making appointments of local county officials to avoid future embarrassment.
