-Call for New Road Safety Policy Implementation

The Authority of Heads of States and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) hasexpressed concerns about the damage caused to regional roads by overloaded trucks and vehicles. During the Sixty-Fifth Ordinary Session held on July 7, 2024, in Abuja, Nigeria, the ECOWAS Leaders urged Member States to adhere to axle load limits outlined in the new harmonized Community Text to prevent premature road deterioration.

The session was attended by Heads of State from various ECOWAS countries, as well as representatives from the UN and AU. The Leaders directed Roads and Transport Ministers to enforce the new Road Safety Policy, aiming to reduce fatalities by 50% by 2023 in alignment with global road safety goals.

Additionally, the Leaders addressed concerns about high air travel costs in the region, impacting tourism, trade, and free movement. They instructed air transport ministers to collaborate with the ECOWAS Commission to implement a common policy on aviation charges to stimulate economic growth and regional integration.

Moreover, the Leaders emphasized the need to address food insecurity and malnutrition in the region, urging support from technical and financial partners. They instructed the Commission to take necessary measures to assist Member States in mitigating the impact on vulnerable populations.

Overall, the ECOWAS Leaders are committed to improving road safety, reducing air travel costs, and addressing food insecurity to foster regional development and integration.
