-Amid Legislative Impasse
Monrovia, Liberia – The Voices of the Elders/Republic of Liberia (VOTE/RL), a non-political organization representing senior citizens in Liberia, has urged the need for restraint and unity in the face of escalating tensions surrounding the Speakership issue at the National Legislature. The statement, read by Elder Maureen J. Hutchinson, emphasizes the need for collective action to safeguard the peace and stability of the nation.
Founded in 2022 during Liberia’s Bicentennial Celebrations, VOTE/RL comprises members aged 60 and above dedicated to addressing development, cultural, and nation-building issues. The organization prides itself on its diverse membership, which includes individuals from various political backgrounds and affiliations.
In light of recent protests and violence, including the burning of parts of the Capitol Building, the Elders have expressed grave concern over the potential disintegration of the nation’s fragile social fabric. They have called upon all stakeholders and citizens to adhere to the good principles.
The Elders implore all Liberians to refrain from engaging in violence or hate speech that could disrupt the peace of the nation. Political, religious, social, and business leaders are urged to act with discernment and clarity in their public statements and actions. Given the high levels of illiteracy and the youthful demographic in Liberia, the Elders stress the importance of unambiguous communication from leaders.
The statement underscores the necessity of upholding the Supreme Court’s decisions, asserting that its judgments are final and take precedence over other laws and political actions. VOTE/RL calls for a professional and unbiased investigation into the Capitol fire, advocating for the inclusion of regional and international experts to ensure a comprehensive inquiry.
The Elders seek to engage with various national leaders, including the President and members of the Cabinet, to mediate and resolve the ongoing leadership crisis in the Legislature. They urge national leaders who have remained silent on the issue to provide accessible interpretations of the Supreme Court’s judgment for the general public.
The Elders encourage the women of Liberia to take an active role in addressing the current crisis, emphasizing their vital contribution to national stability. The statement also acknowledges the commendable intervention of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, whose recent comments have been described as wise and timely. The Elders express their support for her call for unity and peace alongside similar appeals from various civil society organizations, religious communities, and other national leaders.
As Liberia navigates this critical juncture, the Voices of the Elders stand firm in their commitment to fostering dialogue and collaboration among all Liberians, emphasizing the importance of peace and stability in building a brighter future for “Mama Liberia.”
