MONROVIA, LIBERIA – In a powerful address at the recent national convention of the opposition Liberty Party, former Chief Justice and Senator of Maryland County, Cllr. Gloria Musu Scott urged political leaders to prioritize the welfare of Liberia’s youth and to embody the principles of sincerity and integrity in their leadership.
“Political parties in this country are a government in waiting,” Cllr. Scott stated, emphasizing the critical role that parties like the Liberty Party and her own, the United Party, play in shaping the future of the nation. She implored fellow leaders to recognize their duty to the younger generation, who have long been searching for direction amid a tumultuous political landscape.
Cllr. Scott highlighted the pervasive crises affecting various facets of Liberian society, stating, “The family in this country is in crisis. The church is in crisis. The mosque is in crisis.” According to her, these challenges extend to the educational system, the judicial framework, and other integral institutions, all of which are failing to fulfill their foundational purposes.
She called for a collective effort among leaders to address these issues, urging them to foster a culture of ethical conduct. “We need to stop militarizing our youth. We should stop misleading them. We should stop setting examples of being unethical, conducting ourselves without credibility, without integrity,” she said, reinforcing the need for leaders to act as role models rather than perpetuating cycles of misconduct.
Cllr. Scott’s remarks resonate in a country where political disillusionment is rampant and where young people often feel disconnected from the political process. Her call to action serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with leadership and the urgent need for reform within Liberia’s political landscape.
As the Liberty Party and other political entities prepare for future electoral contests, Cllr. Scott’s emphasis on sincerity and ethical leadership may well serve as a guiding principle for those seeking to win the trust of a populace eager for change and stability.
The convention, which gathered party members and stakeholders from across the country, concluded with a renewed commitment to addressing the pressing issues facing Liberia, with Cllr. Scott’s poignant words echoing in the minds of attendees as they look toward the future.
