Monrovia, Liberia – The Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL) wholeheartedly endorses Madam Edith Gongloe Weh in her campaign for the Nimba County Senatorial By-Election, scheduled for April 22, 2025. WONGOSOL urges all women, particularly in Nimba County, to support and vote for Madam Weh to help bridge the gender gap that remains in the legislature.
WONGOSOL strongly believes that Madam Weh is just as capable as any other candidate in the race. Her election would serve as an empowering example to women and girls who have been led to believe that leadership is solely a male prerogative. We encourage all citizens of Nimba to vote for Madam Weh to break the gender barriers that have long restricted women’s political representation in the county. Notably, since the election of Hon. Nohn Rebecca Kidau in 2005, Nimba County has not elected another female senator.
In March, as the race for the Senate seat gained momentum, Samuel Kogar, a current member of the House of Representatives, made a divisive statement by characterizing the election as a “man versus woman” contest. “A woman cannot replace a man,” he pronounced, claiming the political legacy of Prince Johnson and perpetuating the misguided belief that women cannot lead. Such remarks underscore the urgency of electing Madam Weh to challenge these outdated narratives and promote gender inclusivity in governance.
WONGOSOL is confident in Madam Weh’s distinguished record of public service and advocacy for women’s empowerment. As a champion for gender equality and social justice, her presence in the legislature would help shape impactful policies aimed at achieving gender equity. Running on the Liberia People’s Party (LPP) ticket, she offers a strong vision for progressive change, transparency, and accountable leadership.
Since the return of constitutional democracy in Liberia, Hon. Nohn Rebecca Kidau has been the only female lawmaker elected from Nimba County. Under the 1997 proportional representation system and in the post-war elections of 2005, no woman was elected from Nimba. This election presents a critical opportunity for the people of Nimba to rewrite this narrative and enhance women’s representation in governance.
“WONGOSOL firmly believes that women’s political participation is crucial for sustainable development. Madam Weh’s leadership will ensure that the voices of women, youth, and marginalized groups are actively represented in national decision-making,” said [WONGOSOL Representative]. “We urge all eligible voters in Nimba County to embrace this historic moment by electing a competent and visionary leader.”
WONGOSOL also calls on Nimba County citizens to maintain peaceful conduct throughout the electoral process. We urge all political parties, candidates, and their supporters to uphold democratic values, respect one another’s rights, and ensure that the election remains free from violence, intimidation, and hate speech. A peaceful election is essential for the unity and progress of both Nimba and Liberia as a whole.
WONGOSOL stands unwavering in its support for women in leadership and urges the people of Nimba to vote for Madam Edith Gongloe Weh on April 22, 2025.
