-President’s Committee Meets with Airport Authority

Monrovia,– A high-level committee appointed by President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, Sr. is meeting with the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) to investigate last week’s power outage at Roberts International Airport and develop long-term solutions to prevent future disruptions.
The committee, led by Presidential National Security Advisor Kofi Woods, is working with LAA management to assess the cause of the failure, which temporarily disrupted airport operations after an electrical shock damaged critical transmission equipment.
“The team is examining the root cause of this incident and will recommend immediate and sustainable measures to secure reliable power for the airport,” said an LAA spokesperson following the closed-door meeting.
The outage occurred when a surge affected the transmitter line and disabled the automatic switch system. During an April 2 hearing before the Senate Joint Committee on Hydrocarbons, Energy, and Environment, both LAA and the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) pledged to urgently address the technical failures.
President Boakai formed the investigative committee to: 1) Determine the exact cause of the power failure
2) Evaluate the airport’s energy infrastructure vulnerabilities 3) Propose upgrades to ensure uninterrupted operations
“These discussions are critical to developing a resilient power supply system for Liberia’s primary international gateway,” the LAA statement noted, adding that technicians have already begun repairs on the damaged components.
The committee is expected to submit its findings and action plan to the President within two weeks. The review comes as Roberts International Airport prepares for increased passenger traffic during the 2025 tourism season.
