Monrovia, Liberia  – Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, alongside Information Minister Jerolinmek Mathew Piah, officially inaugurated the Arts and Culture Galleries at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT) on Thursday, February 6, 2025. The event marked a significant step in Liberia’s efforts to preserve and promote its rich cultural heritage, with Vice President Koung emphasizing the vital role of culture in shaping the nation’s identity and progress.

In his keynote address, Vice President Koung described culture as a “crucial cornerstone” of Liberia’s development, urging collective efforts to safeguard the nation’s traditions. “Culture cannot be overlooked,” he stated, calling for the integration of Liberia’s cultural heritage into educational curricula to foster a sense of pride and identity among future generations. He highlighted the importance of preserving colloquialisms and traditions, which he said are integral to defining Liberia’s unique character.

Information Minister Piah echoed the Vice President’s sentiments, emphasizing the galleries’ role in revitalizing Liberia’s cultural and artistic sectors. He noted that the initiative represents a milestone in the country’s journey to celebrate its cultural history while leveraging tourism as a driver of economic growth. Minister Piah also called for sustained government support to reactivate the National Culture Center of Liberia, which he described as a critical institution for preserving the nation’s heritage.

Senator Abraham Darius Dillon, Chair of the Senate Committee on Information, Broadcasting, and Tourism, reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to funding the tourism sector. He praised the initiative as a vital step toward fostering national pride and economic development through cultural preservation.

The inauguration ceremony attracted a host of dignitaries, including cabinet ministers, presidential advisors, members of the legislature, and ambassadors, underscoring the significance of the event. The Arts and Culture Galleries are expected to serve as a hub for showcasing Liberia’s artistic and cultural achievements, while also promoting tourism as a key pillar of the nation’s development agenda.
