-To Revolutionize Healthcare in Liberia
In an effort to transform Liberia’s healthcare system, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has secured the Liberia Medical Mission (LMM) 2025, as a Special Presidential Project.
This landmark initiative was finalized during President Boakai’s recent visit to the United States for the United Nations General Assembly, where he engaged with the leadership of the Liberia Medical Mission and convinced them to select Liberia as the destination for their annual medical outreach in 2025.
The Liberia Medical Mission, now under the direct coordination of the President’s Delivery Unit (PDU), will deploy a team of 26 highly skilled medical professionals from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and Africa to Liberia from February 21st to March 6th, 2025. This mission will provide critical healthcare services and training programs at no cost to the Liberian government or private institutions, marking a significant step forward in addressing the nation’s healthcare challenges.
Key Focus Areas of the 2025 Mission
The Liberia Medical Mission 2025 will prioritize three essential healthcare services to improve medical outcomes and strengthen Liberia’s healthcare infrastructure:
Cataract Surgeries
Specialized ophthalmologists will perform cataract surgeries at the Emirates Hospital in Gbarpolu, restoring vision to hundreds of visually impaired patients from Bomi, Cape Mount, Gbarpolu, and Montserrado Counties.
Mental Health Awareness and Training
Mental health professionals will conduct awareness campaigns and training sessions for healthcare providers, schools, and security agencies, focusing on psychological wellness and trauma-informed care.
Free Medical Checkups and Medications
Patients across the designated regions will receive free medical consultations, checkups, and essential medications. Additional Contributions to Liberia’s Healthcare Sector Beyond the core focus areas, the 2025 Liberia Medical Mission will deliver a range of additional services to further bolster the nation’s healthcare system:
Biomedical Equipment Repair
A biomedical engineer will inspect, repair, and calibrate diagnostic equipment at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital and other major healthcare facilities, ensuring that critical medical devices operate efficiently.
Medical Supplies Distribution
Over 20 clinics and hospitals in Gbarpolu, Cape Mount, Bomi, Grand Bassa, and Montserrado will receive essential medical supplies, including personal protective equipment (PPEs), gloves, needles, and linens.
CPR Training for Security Agencies
Seventy-five (75) personnel from the Liberia Immigration Service, Liberia National Police, Prison Officers, Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Liberia National Fire Service will be trained in life-saving CPR techniques.
CPR and Mental Health Awareness Sessions
Training sessions will be conducted at John F. Kennedy Hospital, ELWA Hospital, Catholic Hospital, William V.S. Tubman High School, and J.J. Ross High School to enhance emergency response preparedness.
Specialized Urology Surgeries
A dedicated urologist will be stationed at JFK Memorial Hospital to perform essential surgeries and medical interventions.
Medicine Donations
Over $500,000 worth of medications will be distributed to patients and hospitals in the designated counties.
