Monrovia, Liberia – December 12, 2024 – The opposition Alternative National Congress (ANC) has issued a strong condemnation regarding what it considers the recent misinterpretation of the Supreme Court’s opinion by the Justice Minister, which the party views as a troubling sign of the erosion of democratic principles in Liberia.

In a statement released Saturday, the ANC expressed deep concern over the legal removal of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, calling it an action that blatantly undermines the established rules of the legislature and violates the Constitution of Liberia. While the ANC acknowledges the majority bloc’s right to change leadership, it insists that such actions must be carried out in strict accordance with the rule of law.

“This hasty and unlawful takeover reflects poorly on the current administration and poses a significant threat to our investment opportunities,” the ANC stated. “A nation cannot progress without a steadfast commitment to the rule of law.”

The party emphasized that the orchestrated removal of the Speaker does not enhance the credibility of the government but instead appears to be a political maneuver aimed at settling scores. The ANC expressed disappointment that an administration that came to power promising to rescue Liberia is now engaging in actions that undermine the nation’s integrity.

“We can only describe this mission as reckless,” the ANC continued. “It underscores the urgent need for a balanced control of all three branches of government. Repeating the same mistakes will not yield different results.”

The ANC has called upon all citizens and stakeholders to unite in denouncing these actions and to advocate for a governance system that truly upholds the rule of law and democratic principles.

“Together, we can work towards a brighter future for Liberia, one that is built on justice, transparency, and accountability,” the statement concluded. “Liberia deserves better.”
