-Demands Release of Thomas Etheridge and Others

Monrovia, Liberia – The Concerned Citizens for the Protection of the Constitution, Democracy, and the Rule of Law has strongly condemned the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the National Security Agency (NSA) for human rights violations. The group is demanding the immediate and unconditional release of Thomas Etheridge, Andrew Lawson, and others detained without charge.

In a statement, the group condemned the treatment of Etheridge, who was arrested on December 18, 2024. Reports indicate he was subjected to waterboarding, beatings, and threats of death while in custody. The group described this as a chilling sign of Liberia’s descent into a police state under President Boakai’s administration.

“We strongly condemn the unlawful arrest, inhumane detention, and brutal torture of Thomas Etheridge,” the group stated. They argued that state security forces are being misused to extract false confessions, undermining public trust and fundamental human rights.

The group also called for the release of Andrew Lawson and others who are currently detained without charges. “Free them now!” they urged.

Additionally, they distanced their chairman, Hon. Janjay Baikpeh, from allegations made by state security agents, asserting that these claims are fabricated to discredit a defender of justice and democracy.

The group demanded an impartial investigation into the actions of state security officers present during the recent legislative impasse. They emphasized that these officers, not political opponents, should be the focus of any genuine investigation.

In a call to action, they urged opposition leaders, civil society groups, and defenders of democracy to unite against the growing threat of tyranny. “Today, it is Thomas Etheridge; tomorrow, it could be any of us,” they warned.

The group also appealed to international partners to intervene and address the ongoing human rights abuses under the current administration. They reiterated their demand for the immediate release of Etheridge and called for urgent medical attention for the trauma he has endured.
