Monrovia — In a significant development regarding the investigation into the Capitol building arson, Justice Minister Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh responded to accusations made by Thomas Etherrides, who has alleged that joint security forces tortured him during his arrest. Minister Tweh issued a comprehensive statement categorically denying these claims.
The arson incident, which occurred on December 18, 2024, resulted in extensive damage to the Capitol’s rotunda. In his remarks, Minister Tweh expressed grave concern over the spreading of false statements and misinformation that could undermine the ongoing investigation. He emphasized that such allegations not only jeopardize law enforcement efforts but also threaten the fragile peace that Liberia has worked hard to maintain.
The Ministry of Justice has called for an independent and impartial investigation into the torture allegations, reaffirming the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability. “These claims are a disconcerting pattern of misinformation that seeks to incite fear among our citizens,” Tweh stated.
The Justice Minister reiterated that the investigation into the arson will proceed without bias, ensuring that anyone implicated—regardless of their status—will face the full extent of the law. He highlighted that lawmakers while enjoying certain protections, do not have immunity in cases of criminal activity.
Minister Tweh urged the public to refrain from making inflammatory statements that could incite violence. He called for collaboration with the government to ensure justice is served. “We are dedicated to upholding justice and accountability in this democratic society,” he added.
As the investigation continues, the Ministry of Justice has pledged to keep the public informed and urged citizens to support the rule of law. The situation remains fluid, with calls for calm as the judicial process unfolds in the wake of this serious incident.
Meanwhile,, the Minister of Justice has headed over vehicles to county attorneys including a bus for transportation of workers of the Ministry.
