Nimba County, Liberia – Provisional results from the National Elections Commission (NEC) indicate that Samuel Kogar of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) is set to win the Nimba County Senatorial by-election, securing 51.43% ahead of his rivals.

With 92.66% of votes tallied (682 out of 736 polling places), Kogar has garnered 56,706 votes (51.43%), placing him well ahead of his closest rival, Independent candidate Edith Gongloe-Weh, who trails with 38,454 votes (34.87%).

The by-election was triggered by the death of longtime Senator Prince Y. Johnson, a dominant political figure in Nimba and founder of the MDR, who passed away in November 2024. As Johnson’s political heir and the Unity Party-backed candidate, Kogar was widely viewed as the frontrunner, leveraging both his party’s influence and his own experience in the region.

Nimba, one of Liberia’s most populous and politically influential counties, has drawn national attention throughout the race. The outcome solidifies the MDR’s continued hold on the seat and reinforces Kogar’s position as Johnson’s natural successor.
