-Recommends Education Salary Standards in Liberia

Lofa County District #3 Representative Momo Siafa Kpoto has introduced a proposal to amend Liberia’s Penal Code, specifically Chapter 14, Subchapter D. The amendment aims to criminalize same-sex practices in the country.
Currently, same-sex sexual activity is illegal under sections 14.74 and 14.79 of the Penal Code, which classify consensual same-sex acts as “voluntary sodomy.” Offenders can face up to one year in prison or a fine of L$1,000, or both.
Kpoto’s proposal seeks to impose tougher penalties, designating homosexuality as a non-bailable offense. He argues that Liberian culture, supported by the dominant religions of Christianity and Islam, prohibits same-sex practices and should be firmly discouraged.
Kpoto emphasized that Liberia should remain self-reliant and not fear potential backlash from Western nations, including the USA, regarding these stricter laws.
In addition to the amendment on same-sex practices, Kpoto has also submitted a proposal to standardize salaries and benefits for faculty and staff at Liberia’s public universities and colleges. This act aims to reduce pay disparities, attract qualified educators, and enhance the quality of education in the country.
