– AFL Chief of Staff Assures Liberians as US and Liberia Conduct Joint Aerial Patrols, Dispelling Rumors of Border Conflict
Monrovia, Liberia – Whispers of impending conflict along the Liberian-Guinean border, fueled by unfounded rumors, have recently sparked anxiety amongst residents. Taking swift action to address these concerns and assure the nation, the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), in a show of strength and cooperation, joined forces with the United States to conduct a comprehensive three-day aerial patrol across several key counties. This decisive operation, spearheaded by Brigadier General Davidson F Forleh, Chief of Staff of the AFL, and US Ambassador Mark Toner, aimed to not only demonstrate a commitment to national security but also to personally engage with local communities and address their concerns.
Brigadier General Forleh, speaking directly to the public, unequivocally stated, “There is no war coming to Liberia.” He emphasized that the visible increase in military personnel in Lofa County, strategically situated along the Guinean border, is solely for conducting routine patrols and enhancing security measures. This proactive measure is intended to preemptively address any potential threats and maintain peace and stability in the region.
The joint aerial patrol, a powerful symbol of the enduring partnership between Liberia and the United States, took place between November 20th and 22nd, 2024. Utilizing US military aircraft provided at the request of the AFL, the delegation, which included high-ranking officials from both nations, conducted a thorough assessment of key areas within Maryland, Sinoe, Grand Gedeh, and Lofa Counties. This strategic initiative had multiple objectives:
Strengthening Security and Coordination: The patrol served as a platform to evaluate the effectiveness of interagency cooperation between security forces and local Joint Security Teams. This collaborative approach is essential for maintaining a coordinated and responsive security apparatus.
Monitoring Border Security: to address potential cross-border threats, including the smuggling of goods and illicit activities, the patrol focused on strengthening border surveillance and gathering intelligence.
Engaging Local Communities: Recognizing the importance of building trust and open communication, Ambassador Toner and Brigadier General Forleh made it a priority to engage directly with local leaders and communities. They listened to concerns, addressed rumors, and reassured residents of their commitment to safety and security.
Reinforcing Liberia-US Ties: The joint operation served as a powerful reminder of the enduring partnership between Liberia and the United States. This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to maintaining peace and stability within Liberia and the region.
Evaluating Infrastructure: Beyond security concerns, the patrol also included an assessment of critical infrastructure within the targeted counties. This evaluation will help identify areas for improvement, focusing on both bolstering security measures and fostering economic growth.
During their visits to each county, the delegation participated in a range of activities designed to foster dialogue and understanding. They met with local authorities, toured crucial facilities such as hospitals and ports, and interacted directly with Joint Security Teams stationed in the area. Discussions centered around specific security concerns, the importance of interagency cooperation and intelligence sharing, and addressing the unique challenges faced by local authorities in maintaining security.
In Maryland County, Brigadier General Forleh announced the AFL’s commitment to deploying a Liberia Coast Guard contingent to the Port of Harper. This strategic deployment aims to combat the growing threat of piracy within the Gulf of Guinea and ensure the safety of maritime trade. He also stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation with neighboring countries, such as the Ivory Coast, through joint border patrols, training exercises, and intelligence sharing.
In Lofa County, where rumors of conflict were most prevalent, the delegation directly addressed the anxieties of the community. They reassured residents that the increased military presence was temporary and solely for conducting routine patrols and strengthening border security. The delegation also took the opportunity to visit the Lofa County Hospital and Lofa Community College, where they listened to concerns regarding resource limitations and pledged to work towards finding solutions.
The successful completion of the joint aerial patrol serves as a powerful message to both Liberians and the international community. It highlights the strength of the Liberia-US partnership, demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing security concerns, and underscores a firm commitment to maintaining peace and stability within Liberia.
