-Replacing the Ministry of Internal Affairs

By Jerromie S. Walters

The Liberian Senate has passed an act establishing the Ministry of Local Government, effectively repealing the act that created the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This landmark decision aligns with the Local Government Act of 2018, which aims to devolve greater power and authority to local governments, fostering increased citizen participation and enhancing the role of local authorities in national governance.

The newly established Ministry of Local Government will assume the responsibilities previously held by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, ensuring a seamless transition. Importantly, all contracts, orders, decisions, and actions taken by the Ministry of Internal Affairs prior to the enactment of this new legislation will remain valid and in full force, provided they were authorized under the repealed or amended Acts and executive orders.

Mandate of the Ministry of Local Government

The Ministry of Local Government will play a pivotal role in overseeing and supporting local governments across Liberia. Its key responsibilities include: Executive Oversight of Local Governments**: Ensuring effective management of balanced socio-economic development programs, empowering local communities, and strengthening the delivery of essential social services.

It functions also include Promotion of Good Governance: Encouraging popular participation, inclusiveness, transparency, accountability, and access to justice at the local level.

The Ministry of Local Government endeavors to ensure Peacebuilding and National Integration: Leading efforts to promote reconciliation, local cohesion, and national unification, ensuring sustainable peace, development, and political stability.

The Senate says this restructuring reflects the Liberian government’s commitment to decentralizing power, enhancing local governance, and fostering greater citizen engagement in decision-making processes.

The new ministry aims to address community-specific needs, promote equitable development, and strengthen democratic institutions at the grassroots level.
