–As it Advances to Stage Three
By Vaye A. Lepolu
The Republic of Liberia has successfully reached the third stage in its pursuit of a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. This significant milestone follows a series of strategic efforts aimed at enhancing Liberia’s global standing.
The first phase of Liberia’s campaign took place between February and July 2024, during which the country made an official request for non-public space within both the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Liberia’s efforts paid off, as it successfully secured support from both regional blocs.
The second phase was launched at the UN headquarters in the United States in September 2024, coinciding with President Joseph Nymanu Boakai’s attendance at the UN General Assembly. Currently, the third phase is underway, focusing on the appointment of committee members who will be tasked with engaging other UN member states to garner support for Liberia’s bid. President Boakai is expected to announce the committee members shortly.
These committee members will play a crucial role in Liberia’s campaign, aiming to secure the necessary 227 votes to obtain the non-permanent seat. Minister of Information Jerolinmek Piah emphasized the importance of Liberia’s standing among other member countries, noting that a minimum of 178 votes is required for qualification. Remarkably, Liberia has already garnered 188 votes during this phase of the process.
Minister Piah expressed optimism about Liberia’s prospects, highlighting the country’s commitment to seizing this opportunity after decades of striving for a voice at the UN and on the global stage.
At a recent press briefing at the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism (MICAT), the potential benefits of Liberia’s non-permanent status on the Security Council were outlined. Economically, Liberia stands to gain from increased engagement with the UN Security Council’s Economic Committee. Politically, the status would enhance Liberia’s global influence and provide a platform for participation in international decision-making processes on critical global policies.
Furthermore, membership in the UN Security Council is expected to strengthen Liberia’s diplomatic relationships with other member states, bolstering its political capital and support on the international stage. In the context of African leadership, Liberia aims to play a pivotal role in addressing continental issues and advocating for African interests at a global level, demonstrating its commitment to the collective goals of the African continent.
