On Tuesday, the 14th of May 2024, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Francis S. Nyumalin Sr., revealed plans for the upcoming elections for Clan chiefs, paramount chiefs, and town leaders across Liberia.

This initiative stems from the establishment of the National Council of Chiefs and Elders in 2012, formalized through the Local Government Act in 2018.

Under this legislation, the National Council, led by Chief Zanzan Korwor, will oversee the election process, ensuring transparency and fairness with the support of President Joseph N. Boakai and the House of Legislature. The council will elect county chairmen and secretariats for effective local governance.

In preparation for the elections, the Ministry of Internal Affairs will conduct workshops for elders, chiefs, commissioners, and city mayors, emphasizing the importance of upholding Liberian cultures and traditions.

Minister Nyumalin stressed that involvement in political activities by chiefs and elders will not be permitted, in line with President Boakai’s commitment to preserving the country’s cultural heritage.

Additionally, the Minister highlighted the crucial role of chiefs and elders in promoting reconciliation and maintaining peace within communities. He urged them to refrain from misusing cultural symbols, such as the bushmaster, in protests or demonstrations, emphasizing the need to protect Liberia’s rich cultural identity.
