-On improving asylum in West and Central Africa.
{Monrovia} The Executive Director of the Liberia Refugees Repatriation and Resettlement Commission {LRRRC} is attending a 3-day conference on improving asylum in West and Central Africa in Dakar, Senegal.
The LRRRC Boss Patrick Worzie, who is accompanied by the commission’s director for protection, Mr. Darrell Cholopleh, is expected to do a presentation on the processing duration of asylum seekers and First instance and appeal processes.
The conference, which is being held in Dakar, Senegal, brings together hundreds of officials from UN agencies and West and Central African member States, amongst others, to discuss issues relating to asylum in the regions.
At the ongoing conference, Liberia is also expected to elaborate on its method of approach to addressing asylum concerns and challenges faced by the government of Liberia in addressing the issue.
The conference is organized by the West and Central African regional bureau of the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR).
In Liberia, the record shows that the asylum seekers population stands at 1,780 as of January 1, 2024, including 1157 refugees and 623 asylum seekers, of which 44 percent are females and 56 percent males.
Of the total population, 39 percent are children below 18 years, 64 percent are women and children, Ivorian nationals represent 85 percent, while other nationalities report 15 percent. Between January and June, the LRRRC admitted 50 asylum seekers who assessed and met all criteria.
