-Signs Quality of Service Regulation

Liberians can expect now improved service delivery following the signing of the Quality of Service regulation, also known as “QoS.” This milestone, hailed as historic by the LTA, marks a significant achievement in the sector since its inception in the early 2000s.

Edwina Crump Zackpah, Chairperson of the LTA, described the regulation as a testament to the Authority’s commitment to enhancing people’s lives through digital connectivity. During the signing ceremony, Madam Zackpah emphasized the importance of inclusivity and equality by holding telecommunications service providers accountable for the quality of their services.

The regulation sets standards for network performance, call reliability, internet speed, and other key metrics to ensure that all Liberians have access to high-quality telecommunications services, irrespective of their location or socioeconomic status. The LTA remains dedicated to ensuring that consumers benefit from improved service delivery in the near future.

She says, “This regulation is not just about meeting bench mark but it is about empowering individuals, businesses and communities respectively.”

The signing of the important document by the LTA boss marks a significant milestone in Liberia’s digital transformation journey. “This is a journey towards a future where every Liberian has the opportunity to thrive in a connected world and it is also a journey twoards prosperity, innovation and progress ” she further emphasized. 

Madam Zackpah, referring to the recent optic cable cut in Abidjan, Ivory Coast that affected Liberia and other countries, highlighted the critical importance of reliable telecommunications infrastructure as the cornerstone of economic development. She noted that such infrastructure fosters entrepreneurship, enables access to education for students, and facilitates the delivery of essential healthcare services.

She also emphasized the impact of the development on telecommunications experience, stating, “Today, we take a big step in ensuring that your phone calls are clearer, your internet is faster and your overall Telecommunications experience is better.”

Furthermore, the LTA boss used the occasion to reassure the population that through its regulatory mandate, it is committed to ensuring that every Liberian, regardless of location, benefits from reliable and high-quality telecommunications services.

Also speaking at the signing ceremony was Julius Luke, the Acting Chairperson of the National Telecommunications Consumers Association, who commended the LTA for the commendable step taken, especially in the interest of the consumers.

He also disclosed plans by his organization to launch a quality of service exercise to ensure that service providers are on par with the regulatory body for the betterment of the people.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by service providers who hailed the LTA for the initiative and pledged to work towards the implementation of the new regulation. However, they appealed to the LTA for flexibility in executing the new mandate, especially during a time when they are facing international optic cut crises and challenges.

Meanwhile, Ivar Jones, the Chairperson on Post and Telecommunications at the House of Representatives, commended the LTA for its prompt actions in the sector and urged them to continue their efforts. The Margibi Lawmaker emphasized the importance of consumers receiving adequate benefits from their investments and called on service providers to contribute to the sector’s collective welfare. 

He believes the recent signing of the quality of service document marks a significant milestone, signalling the expectation for service providers to enhance their services for the benefit of consumers and ensure returns on their investments.
