-LNP Launches Investigation

A disquieting incident unfolded at the Samuel Kanyon Doe (SKD) Sports Stadium on Saturday, January 25, 2025, when Moses Garzeawu, a correspondent for BBC Liberia, was manhandled by an officer of the Liberia National Police (LNP).
The altercation occurred as Garzeawu, while heading to cover the National County Sports Meet games, crossed a barricade created by the LNP to ensure orderliness.
Garzeawu, dressed casually in shorts and slippers was flogged by one of the officers with his Batu after he reportedly resisted the officers’ order. He was later dragged out of the SKD Sports Complex.
This incident has raised significant concerns about the treatment of journalists in Liberia and the broader implications for press freedom in the country.
LNP Responds
In the aftermath of the incident, the Liberia National Police (LNP) issued an official statement acknowledging the situation and assuring the public that a thorough investigation is currently underway. The police force emphasized its commitment to protecting press freedom while holding all parties accountable for their actions.
“We urge the public to remain calm and avoid any actions that might further escalate the situation,” the statement read. “The Liberia National Police is dedicated to ensuring accountability and safeguarding the rights of journalists, while also upholding law and order.”
The LNP further called for patience and cooperation as the investigation proceeds. The statement was signed by Deputy Commissioner Cecelia G. Clarke, spokesperson for the Liberia National Police, who reiterated the police force’s commitment to transparency and fairness in handling the matter.
