Monrovia – In an exhibit of solidarity with the Islamic community, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has initiated a generous donation of food and cash to mosques across Liberia in observance of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

The initiative, totaling 5,500 bags of 25kg rice alongside financial support, was officially launched on Monday, March 24, 2025, at the historic Benson Street Mosque in Monrovia. The donation was spearheaded by Mamaka Bility, Minister of State without Portfolio, who represented the President.

Nationwide Outreach to Muslim Communities

The first phase of the donation reached several mosques in Montserrado County’s District #8, including Benson Street, Gurley Street, Newport Street, and the Salafiya Mosque, with plans to extend the gesture nationwide.

At the Benson Street Mosque, 50 bags of rice and L$25,000 were presented to the leadership. Minister Bility announced that all mosques under the program will receive similar support, emphasizing that the aid targets the most vulnerable who struggle to afford meals during Ramadan.

Minister Bility expressed honor in delivering the President’s goodwill, stating that the donation reflects his unwavering respect for all faiths.

“This is a demonstration of President Boakai’s commitment to religious tolerance and his dedication to supporting those in need,” she said. She urged beneficiaries to embrace the assistance and uphold the spiritual teachings of Ramadan—compassion, charity, and unity.

Islamic Community Responds with Gratitude

Imam Alhaji Kamara, Deputy Imam of Montserrado County’s District #2, accepted the donation on behalf of Liberia’s Muslim community. He praised President Boakai’s longstanding support for religious harmony, stating, “We are not surprised by this gesture—the President has always shown deep regard for our community.”

Imam Kamara offered special prayers for the President and the nation, seeking forgiveness, blessings, and divine guidance for Liberia. A collective prayer for peace and prosperity followed the ceremony.

At the Gurley Street Mosque, Sheikh Abubakar Sumawou hailed the intervention, noting its significance for over 500 worshippers who gather daily to break their fast (iftar). “This donation means so much to us—it will help feed many families during this sacred month,” he said.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide through fasting (sawm), prayer (salah), and reflection. It commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
