NIMBA COUNTY, LIBERIA – As the electoral process intensifies for the Nimba County Senatorial By-Election scheduled for April 22, 2025, the National Elections Commission (NEC) has unveiled a provisional list of eight aspirants vying to fill the seat left vacant by the late Senator Prince Johnson, who passed away in November 2024 at the age of 72. WomenVoices takes a comprehensive look at the contenders.
The list, which includes independent candidates and representatives from various political parties, is subject to review and potential challenges from citizens, civil society organizations (CSOs), and community-based organizations (CBOs) in Nimba County.
The NEC has emphasized the importance of transparency and adherence to electoral laws, urging citizens to file written complaints with substantial evidence if they have concerns about any of the candidates. This process ensures that the final list of contenders reflects the will of the people and upholds the integrity of the election.
Below is an in-depth profile of the eight candidates, highlighting their backgrounds, political careers, and visions for Nimba County.
1. Madam Edith Gongloe-Weh
Madam Edith Gongloe-Weh, a native of Gleayee Zorpea in Nimba County District #9, is a seasoned politician and former Superintendent of Nimba County. She assumed office in June 2009, succeeding the late Robert Kamei, and quickly embarked on transformative projects, including the renovation of the Superintendent’s compound and the construction of schools, town halls, and bridges. Her leadership was instrumental in Nimba County’s successful hosting of the 2010 July 26 celebrations and the county’s victories in the 2009/2010 National County Sports Meet.
However, her tenure was marred by allegations of corruption and misapplication of funds, leading to her booking by the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC). Despite these challenges, Gongloe-Weh remains a prominent figure in Nimba politics, having contested in multiple senatorial elections. She is now appealing to voters to support her as an independent candidate, emphasizing the transformative potential of women’s leadership.
2. Rep. Samuel Gongben Kogar
Rep. Samuel Gongben Kogar, the current lawmaker for Nimba County District #5, is a veteran politician with a career spanning over a decade. He first rose to prominence as a consultant at the Ministry of Finance and later served as Acting Deputy Minister at the Ministry of National Security. Elected in 2011 on the ticket of the late Senator Prince Johnson’s National Union for Democratic Progress (NUDP), Kogar has since switched allegiances, joining the People’s Unification Party (PUP) and, most recently, the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR).
Kogar’s tenure has been marked by controversy, including allegations of bribery and involvement in the removal of House Speakers. Despite these controversies, he remains a formidable candidate, leveraging his experience and connections to appeal to voters. If elected, his ascension to the Senate would trigger another by-election in District #5.
3. Cllr. Garrison Yealue
Cllr. Garrison Yealue, a former Representative of Nimba County District #4, is a founding member of the disbanded NUDP. Known for his advocacy on behalf of Nimba County, Yealue played a key role in increasing the budget for health facilities and securing development funds for the county. However, his political career has been fraught with tensions, particularly with the late Senator Prince Johnson, who supported his opponent in the 2017 elections.
Yealue’s recent appointment as Chairperson of the Governance Commission under former President George Weah was short-lived, as he was dismissed by the current administration over allegations of political involvement. Despite these setbacks, Yealue remains a respected figure in Nimba, with many praising his commitment to development and governance.
4. R. Matenckay Tingban
R. Matenckay Tingban, a former Representative of Nimba County District #9, is known for his advocacy and outspokenness on issues affecting Nimba. Described by former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as a “frisky pekin,” Tingban’s tenure was marked by his efforts to address the needs of his constituents. However, his focus on national politics, including his bid to become Vice President Joseph Boakai’s running mate, led to his defeat in the 2017 elections.
Tingban’s decision to contest the by-election has been met with mixed reactions, with some viewing it as a strategic move to split votes in Yarwin Mensonnon. Nevertheless, he remains a candidate to watch, appealing to voters with his experience and vision for Nimba.
5. Mack Gbliwon
Mack Gbliwon, a former Nimba County Inspector, is a newcomer to the political scene but a well-known figure in the business community. A native of Louplay in District #6, Gbliwon has built a reputation as a successful entrepreneur, particularly in the cocoa trade. His appointment as County Inspector in 2019 under the Weah administration was marked by his efforts to foster unity and development in Nimba.
Gbliwon’s campaign focuses on leveraging his business acumen and leadership experience to drive economic growth and infrastructure development in Nimba. He is positioning himself as a “Bridge of Unity,” appealing to voters with his vision for a prosperous and inclusive county.
6. Torbor Tee Wonokay Farngalo
Torbor Tee Wonokay Farngalo is a relatively unknown figure in Nimba’s political landscape. Little is known about his background, occupation, or educational qualifications, making his candidacy a subject of curiosity and skepticism. Despite the lack of clarity about his intentions, Farngalo is determined to make his mark in the by-election, appealing to voters with his promise of fresh leadership.
7. Dr. George Parkinson Gonpu
Dr. George Parkinson Gonpu, a native of Nimba County District #3, is a seasoned educator and political leader. As the head of the African Democracy Movement of Liberia, Gonpu has outlined a comprehensive vision for Nimba, emphasizing education, economic development, and infrastructure improvement. His campaign is built on a platform of integrity, accountability, and empowerment, with a focus on addressing the challenges facing Nimba’s youth and women.
Gonpu’s extensive experience in leadership and governance makes him a strong contender, with many viewing him as a candidate capable of bridging the gap between Nimba and the national government.
8. Justin Oldpa Yeazeahn (Prophet Key)
Justin Oldpa Yeazeahn, popularly known as Prophet Key, is a controversial figure in Nimba politics. Known for his abrasive language and confrontational style, Yeazeahn has gained notoriety for his public criticisms of prominent leaders, including the late Senator Prince Johnson and former President George Weah. Despite his lack of a track record in public service, Yeazeahn is appealing to voters as a “son of Nimba” who is committed to serving his community.
The Nimba County Senatorial By-Election presents a critical opportunity for voters to choose a leader who can address the county’s pressing challenges and drive sustainable development. With a diverse field of candidates, each bringing unique experiences and visions, the election promises to be a closely contested and pivotal moment for Nimba’s future.
